Cape of Good Hope

Carriers are re-discovering the old Cape of Good Hope route, when there are low oil prices, but increasingly costly Suez Canal fees. With the result of lower fuel costs, some carriers are sailing between Asia and Northern Europe via the southern coast of Africa, to avoid paying USD 500,000 – USD 750,000 fees for going through the Suez Canal. Although the Suez Canal authorities have offered a five per cent discount, that is obviously not sufficient based on the number of carriers opting to take the African route.
